Redesigned versions of the Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Terrain will debut at the Detroit auto show next month, according to The Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with the plans.
Both models are getting long in the tooth. Neither the Traverse nor the Terrain has been fully redesigned since 2009. Typically, automakers try to introduce a new generation around every five years.
Expected to debut for the 2018 model year, the new Terrain should ride on the same platform as its twin, the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox. It should receive the same engine lineup: a 1.5-liter turbo-four, 2.0-liter turbo-four, and a 1.6-liter turbodiesel-four. GM has not made an official comment about the rumored debuts.
Recently, GM CFO Chuck Stevens said GM had “the oldest crossover lineup in the industry.” The GMC Acadia, which debuted earlier this year at the Detroit auto show as a 2017 model, hadn’t been fully updated since the 2007 model year. The 2018 Chevrolet Traverse is closely related to the Acadia.
The Detroit auto show runs January 8-22, opening to the public January 14.
A week before the Detroit show starts, Toyota will debut a concept vehicle at the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Toyota hasn’t provided further details on its new concept, but says it “highlights the critical importance of UX [the user experience] in the development of highly automated vehicles and robots.”
