Fans of the 4Runner may have felt left out when the 2016 Toyota Tacoma debuted with a TRD Off-Road trim. Now, the SUV gets its own version in the form of the 2017 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium.
TRD Off-Road models receive badges on the C-pillar as well as floor mats embroidered with the TRD Off-Road logo. TRD Off-Road Premium SUVs additionally receive red TRD stitching on the front headrests. Both trim levels ride on an attractive set of concave seven-spoke alloy wheels. TRD models come standard with the Multi-Terrain Select system and Crawl Control feature available on the standard 4Runner. The latter helps maintain a constant speed when traversing rugged terrain by automatically regulating the throttle and brake, so a driver only has to worry about steering. Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road models can be specified with the optional Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System, which allows for more wheel travel at slower speeds.
The new trim levels will account for just two of the 4Runner’s six available grades, which also include the SR5, SR5 Premium, Limited, and TRD Pro. The hardest-core TRD Pro carries over mostly unchanged, though a new Cement paint color is available for 2017. Pricing will be available closer to launch later this year.
