Toyota has filed to trademark the Supra name in Europe, rekindling our hopes of a comeback for the iconic sports car.
The trademark application was filed June 3 with the European Union Intellectual Property Office, Supramkv.com first reported. The filing comes two years after Toyota moved to trademark the Supra name in the U.S.
The story for a Toyota Supra successor has been building for years. President Akio Toyoda has been open about his desire to see the Supra return to the Toyota lineup. In 2013, BMW and Toyota announced they would develop a shared sports car architecture. A year later, Toyota debuted the FT-1 concept that everyone swore would be the next Supra, although Toyota wouldn’t confirm.
We can only hope that Toyota is inching forward ever so slowly in reviving the sports car, but there’s no way to know for sure. Automakers often file to trademark names as a precautionary measure, even when there are no immediate plans to use them. Still, the signs are looking better and better for a comeback, and it seems like both fans and Toyota want it to return. Earlier rumors suggested we could even see a Supra in late 2017.
