Toyota unleashed a litter of TRD-fettled machines at the 2015 SEMA show, one of which was this Corolla. Painted in the same Silver Pearl paint as the rest of the bunch, this compact may not be “sexy,” as Toyota describes it, but it does at least boast some performance upgrades to go with the aesthetic touches.
-Based on the Corolla Eco, the TRD concept swaps out that model’s standard CVT automatic for a six-speed manual, and its 1.8-liter four-cylinder now exhales through a free-flow cat-back exhaust. The factory rolling stock has been binned in favor of some bitchin’ 19-inch bronze TRD wheels wrapped in 255/30 Michelin rubber. The suspension also has been dropped by an inch up front and 1.5 inches out back for a more aggressive stance that we admit looks good.

Toyota promises that it’s going to have a long, hard look at the reactions of showgoers and—gulp—our fellow journalists to the TRD cars, which means you could see something like this in dealerships sometime in the future. If Toyota does produce them, it would follow through on comments made by executives earlier this year regarding an expansion of the mostly dormant performance brand to more models. We say go ahead and build this one—the Corolla needs all the excitement it can get.
