As soon as Toyota mentioned that the latest iteration of the C-HR concept, which debuted at this year’s Frankfurt auto show, sat on the company’s newest architecture, we assumed any production model would do the same. Now, following the Tokyo auto show, we have confirmation of both: the production version of the C-HR indeed will use the new Prius’s TNGA platform and, well, that there will be a production version of the C-HR crossover.

We learned of the C-HR’s future at a roundtable discussion with Toyota’s executive vice president Mitsuhisa Kato, who said that the Prius was the first car to use TNGA and the next will be the production C-HR. Although we were pitching Kato-san questions through a translator, based on his insistence that a TNGA-based Corolla was to come “later,” it sounds as though the C-HR will arrive relatively soon. It still isn’t clear whether the C-HR would be sent stateside as a Toyota or as a Scion, but we first reported on a Nissan Juke–fighting crossover from Scion a year ago, so we’re betting on it coming under that brand. Either way, TNGA is just getting started; the company would like to transition as many of its compact-ish-size vehicles onto the architecture within five years, and it would like to apply modular, TNGA-like principles to its entire lineup within 10 years.
