The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration finally knows the full scope of the massive Takata airbag recall that’s been ongoing for months: The Detroit News reports that the 11 automakers involved have identified every VIN covered by the recall. -“An informed consumer is one of our strongest allies in ensuring recalled vehicles are repaired,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said in a statement. “NHTSA’s VIN search tool at safercar.gov makes it easy for consumers to check if their vehicle is affected by the recall, and to take action in getting the airbags replaced.”
-The massive recall, involving 11 automakers and nearly 34 million vehicles sold in the U.S., seeks to replace Takata-manufactured airbag inflators containing a defective propellant that can degrade over time, causing the airbags to deploy with excess force and potentially shoot shrapnel at vehicle occupants in a crash. The NHTSA attributes seven deaths and more than 100 injuries worldwide to the defective driver and passenger airbags.
-The ongoing Takata recall, the largest such action in the history of any industry, has prompted NHTSA to create a new Recalls Spotlight website at safercar.gov to make it easier for U.S. car owners to determine whether their vehicles are affected.
-NHTSA’s announcement comes on the heels of massive recall expansions from Honda and Toyota, which each added more than 1.3 million vehicles to existing actions this week.

The Detroit News reports that the Senate Commerce Committee will meet next week to hear testimony from NHTSA experts, the Transportation Department’s Office of the Inspector General, and representatives from Takata and automakers regarding the recall.
