-That hippie-era icon of slow and hazy motoring freedom, the VW camper, may be only a fading memory here, but the camper-ized Volkswagen van lives on in Europe. There, the latest iteration of the concept has just been introduced.
Today called the California—fittingly named after the state that so warmly embraced it back in the day—this VW camper is based on the new sixth-generation of Volkswagen’s T series van. Powered exclusively by diesel engines (sorry, not biodiesel), the vehicle later will add two gasoline options.
-The California comes in three trim levels: base, Coast, and Ocean. The base model includes the pop top, window shades, and a removable picnic table and folding chairs. The Coast brings more of the camping experience, with a sink, stove, and built-in cooler. It marries that with the trendy-hotel experience, in the form of aluminum-and-wood trim. Finally, the Ocean adds power operation for the pop top, auxiliary heating, double-glazed windows, and dimmable LED lighting.

Unfortunately, the new California will not be plying Highway 1 or any other U.S. byways. Those of us in America who want to take our own long, strange trip will have to content ourselves with one of the ever rarer—and increasingly pricey—examples from the VW camper’s heyday.
