While not quite the yuppie-mobile that a ragtop E30 3-series was back in the late ’80s, the modern BMW 2-series Convertible is still a fashionable way to make its driver look good. Such vanity costs two percent more for the 2016 model, although BMW throws in more standard equipment. At the top of the lineup, BMW also is now offering all-wheel drive on the M235i convertible as did already on the coupe.

The base 228i Convertible, with its 2.0-liter turbocharged four, now includes much of the former $2050 Sport Line package as standard. That includes more aggressively bolstered seats, glossy black interior trim, red stitching on the steering wheel, Sport kidney grilles, and sundry exterior bits in black or chrome. The Sport Line’s sport suspension and black mirror caps are not standard, but instead migrate to a new M Sport package, which replaces the M Sport Line. A new Luxury Package, which chromes the tailpipes and much of the front fascia, is available—but only once you’ve added the Premium Package and leather seats. The 2016 228i Convertible is $39,645 (up $795 from last year), while the 228i xDrive Convertible starts at $41,645, a $995 increase from 2015.
-The not-quite-an-M2 M235i Convertible now opens at $49,745 (versus $48,650 previously), and xDrive is available, for $2000 more. Keyless entry, a garage-door remote, satellite radio, and auto-dimming side-view and rearview mirrors are newly standard, effectively negating the $2150 Premium Package except for leather seats. Those are now a separate option.

BMW added auto high-beams to the $700 Driver Assistance Plus Package, which already includes forward-collision and lane-departure alerts, along with auto-braking with pedestrian detection. Of all the BMW options, this one can actually be called a value considering the technology included. The one that isn’t, despite a $200 price reduction to $1950, is the Technology Package. That brings navigation, BMW’s telematics system, a bigger LCD in the instrument cluster, and connectivity with BMW’s smartphone apps.

Nothing changes for 2016 2-series coupes, except the price increases mirror those of the convertibles. The 228i is now $33,845; the 228i xDrive is $35,845; while the M235i is $45,145 (or $47,145 with xDrive).
