After all the teasers, previews, and waiting that we’ve been put through in the run-up to Chevrolet’s debut of the all-new 2016 Camaro, the car unexpectedly mugged for the camera live on this morning’s Squawk Box on CNBC. Never mind that the sixth-generation Camaro was supposed to be revealed tomorrow on Detroit’s Belle Isle at 4 p.m., for whatever reason it was shown completely uncovered on a financial reporting show. No, we don’t get it, either, but at least we can finally show you what the entire car looks like.
-
Immediately clear is the Camaro’s evolutionary styling. Sure, there are some new LED running lights, a deeper front intake, and slimmer headlights, but overall, the 2016 model appears to be a 7/8ths-scale version of the outgoing fifth-gen car. The size differential is no illusion, as the Camaro transitions to the smaller and lighter Alpha rear-drive architecture that underpins the Cadillac ATS. (The old Camaro sat on a chopped-down Zeta architecture shared with, among other things, the gigantic Chevrolet Caprice police special, the old Pontiac G8, and today’s Chevy SS sedan.) So far, CNBC has only afforded viewers a few glimpses of the 2016 Camaro, so full information is forthcoming.

Beyond the Camaro debut exclusive, CNBC was also treated to at least part of a hot lap of Belle Isle’s Grand Prix course in a V-6–powered 2016 Camaro prototype, which you can watch below. The two biggest surprises? First, that the V-6 sounds positively wicked, and second, that the car GM chose to show off to CNBC was equipped with a stick. Save the Manuals, guys, Save the Manuals. Watch the Camaro lap below, and stay tuned to this space for more Camaro news as it becomes available.
