New convertible model from luxury car manufacturer will go on sale in mid-2016 with a price tag of about £250,000Rolls-Royce chiefs have confirmed that the luxury car manufacturer is working on a new convertible model that will reach market by the middle of 2016.
In a statement Rolls-Royce said the new model will "build on the success of Phantom, Ghost and Wraith by continuing to boldly shape the future of the marque with contemporary, graceful and sensuous styling. It will deliver effortless, open-top touring through the perfect marriage of modern Rolls-Royce luxury, style and elegance with an engaging and exhilarating driving experience".
The name for the new car has yet to be announced, however. The car is provisionally known as the Wraith Drophead Coupé – it will share its wheelbase and two-door layout with the Wraith – but confirmation from Rolls-Royce that this will be a new model hint that the model could receive its own bespoke name. The revival of Corniche is one possible option that is favoured by some senior company chiefs.
Development of the car already underway and is currently at the prototype testing stage. Indeed, earlier this year it was spied undergoing testing near BMW’s headquarters in Munich.
Rolls-Royce chief executive Torsten Müller-Ötvös said: “I am truly delighted to confirm today the development of our new model which will open an exciting new chapter in the great story of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. We are currently developing an exciting and thoroughly contemporary interpretation of a pinnacle drophead tourer which will introduce even more discerning men and women to Rolls-Royce ownership.”
Company chairman Peter Schwarzenbauer added: “The announcement of a new Rolls-Royce model is always a seminal moment in the automobile industry. When it arrives in 2016, this elegant and sensuous new car will build on the success of our current models and will play a key part in fulfilling Rolls-Royce Motor Cars’ commitment to long-term sustainable growth.”
A public unveiling at the Geneva motor show in March 2015 is anticipated, although this has not been confirmed by official sources. Prices for the new model are expected to start at about £250,000.
