Mazda is recalling 193,484 CX-9 crossovers in the U.S. because their ball joints can rust and cause the front control arms to break off, according to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

On 2007-2014 CX-9 models, the ball joints connecting the lower control arms to the front wheels may loosen or suddenly detach while driving, which can result in a partial loss of steering or stability. Mazda knows of at least 16 reports of ball joint separation since NHTSA opened an investigation in June. The company found one car with this problem in May 2012 and later modified the parts on later CX-9s in January 2014. However, Mazda did not consider a recall since it considered checking these loose joints as part of regular CX-9 maintenance. Also, Mazda said it thought the joint would not break without the driver first hearing a noise, although NHTSA reports found they could indeed break without any warning.

Due to parts availability, dealers will start repairs in September on 2007-2009 models affected in the “salt belt” states, followed by 2010-2014 models in these states, and finally, for CX-9 models in all states.
