It was only a matter of time before the clan at Goodwood treated the Wraith to a haircut. We like to imagine Rolls-Royce brought in 1980s celebrity stylist JosĂ© Eber to do the honors, arming the Beverly Hills Frenchman with a reciprocating saw, an angle grinder, and perhaps a good old acetylene torch. Whatever the means of conception and construction, Dawn—the fourth Rolls nameplate of the company’s modern era—is on the way.
- -According to the BMW unit, the due-in-2016 drophead’s name was not inspired by dish soap or sorority girls of a certain era, but rather the Silver Dawn of the early 1950s. While the hardtop cars were the first Rollers offered with a standard factory body, the convertibles were still coachbuilt. Only 28 of the open-air machines were constructed between 1950 and 1954. In the press release announcing the upcoming car, Rolls handily omits the Silver Dawn of the 1990s, essentially an upgraded Series III Silver Spur sedan with traction control.

Speaking of the release, the florid nature of the following paragraph is just too fantastic not to share: “ ‘Dawn’ perfectly expresses the character of the new Rolls-Royce. In its tentative, inchoate, anticipatory state, dawn is the world coming to light from the ethereal dark of the night. The early-day chill of dawn provides an erotic tingle on the skin, awakening the senses and passions as the day begins. Like Eleanor Thornton, thought by many to be the inspiration behind the Spirit of Ecstasy, the Rolls-Royce Dawn will also prove itself to be the muse that leads its owner to believe that at the start of the day, anything is possible.”
-Please, sign us up for that erotic tingle, won’t you? We’ll pay through the nose for an erotic tingle.
