Ever since Jeremy Clarkson was let go from Top Gear, and James May and Richard Hammond vowed not to return without him, rumors have been swirling that the trio could bring their brand of automotive entertainment to Netflix. Now, British tabloid The Mirror adds some fuel to that whispered possibility, with an Underwood-style twist: Apparently, the team wants to call the show “House of Cars.”
-That, of course, would be a cheeky nod to Netflix’s runaway hit original series, “House of Cards,” staring Kevin Spacey—whose image we’ve defaced, literally and otherwise, above. It would also be a handy workaround for the fact that Clarkson, Hammond, and May can’t use the name “Top Gear.” That brand still belongs to the BBC, which plans to bring the show back for a new season next year, albeit with a whole new cast and a new producer.
-Of course, all of this is just speculation: The Mirror only quotes an unnamed “pal” in its report, and, well, they don’t call them tabloids based on their diligent fact-checking. Still, the report points out the one clear benefit that Clarkson & Co. would have if they chose Netflix over a cable TV home: Like the BBC, the streaming video service doesn’t have to answer to advertisers. So there wouldn’t be any concern over the lads offending automakers and losing out on revenue. “What would they do if Jaguar or Volvo had a sponsorship deal but they wanted to berate its latest new car,” the unnamed source told The Mirror. “Jeremy doesn’t like being told what to do. It could cause huge arguments.”

Then again, it doesn’t seem to take much to get Jeremy upset.
