PM promises big investment in roads, if he gets re-elected
Prime minister David Cameron has pledged to spend big on the road network if his party wins this year's general election
Prime minister David Cameron has pledged additional investment for Britain's roads if he wins this year's general election.
Speaking at Goodwood, where plans to build a new Rolls-Royce 4x4 were confirmed, Cameron said: "I know that people focus on what we're planning for HS2 and the rail network, but if we win the next election we will be spending three times what we are spending on that project on other infrastructure projects, including roads."
The budget for HS2 is currently thought to be in the region of £43bn, which would mean the road network could be in line for a serious injection of cash.
"These big projects can make a big difference to our country. Too many recoveries in the past have been focused on London and the South East. I hope projects, including HS2, but also tackling road issues like the A27 in this region, can open up all of our country to economic prosperity."
Cameron also highlighted the need to encourage car makers from every section of the industry, including motorsport, in order to maintain its current levels of growth.
"From Formula 1 to high-end car makers to more mass market and niche players, Britain has it all," he said. "The industry drives exports and has values that we need more of - high investment in skills, research and development, design, science, training and more - and if we get it right at every level it drives success.
"Some people see foreign-owned companies working in Britain as an issue. I see these partnerships as fundamental to our prosperity. Rolls-Royce is a fabulously successful example. The investment in the company has been complemented by the British skill set and that is crucial to our industrial future."
