The Geländewagen is not only one of our favorite Mercedes-Benz models, it is one of the coolest off-roaders of all time. Developed by Steyr-Daimler-Puch in the 1970s with militaries in mind as the primary customers, it has morphed into an ultra-expensive lifestyle vehicle—albeit one that can actually perform when needed.
Commemorating the 35th anniversary of its 1979 launch, Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the G-class Edition 35, which is available as a package for the G500 (a.k.a. the G550 here) and the European-market G350 BlueTec turbo-diesel. Outside, it looks a bit more bad-ass than a regular model thanks to its black bumpers, 18-inch wheels, and metallic black roof, mirror caps, and fender arches. Available only with white, silver, or black exterior paint, it is fitted with the Sport bundle and a chrome package, and G550s also include a performance exhaust system.
The G-class Edition 35 comes with a bespoke interior in two-tone white and black interior or all black. Red contrast stitching is always part of the package, and exclusive to this special edition.

Both the modern-day G350 BlueTec and the G550 are a far cry from the frugal Geländewagen as it was launched three and a half decades ago. But the basic architecture and the looks have been preserved. There is no confirmation yet on a U.S.-market launch of the G-class Edition 35, although it is intended to be a global offering with each market choosing the name under which it will be marketed.
