A moving festival of colored chinos and multimillion-dollar cars, the Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance is the best way to see the machines competing in Sunday’s concours the way they’re meant to be viewed—in motion. Free for spectators, it also serves as a tiebreaker for the Big Event; cars that complete the entire Tour have the advantage.
The route starts near the Lodge at Pebble Beach and goes on to trace portions of 17 Mile Drive, heads out into the mountains to the east, circles Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, runs south and back again on a stretch of Highway 1, and pauses in Carmel-by-the-Sea for lunch. It’s here that you’ll get the best look at the cars as they’re parked side-by-side down Ocean Avenue—provided you can pick your way through the dense crowd—usually with a cheerful owner (or handler) at its side.

As is customary, this year’s crop ranged from the earliest days of the automobile up to the late 1960s and included a whole passel of 1957 and 1958 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossas, a fleet of Tatras, and several Ruxtons. (All three are special classes at this year’s concours.) There was also a rad—and massive—1938 Mercedes-Benz 540K Streamliner that you have to see to believe. Head into the gallery for a representative sampler of what was on the Tour and to see some of what will be on the 18th fairway of the Pebble Beach links come Sunday.
