General Motors will introduce a new EV platform in 2021 that will accommodate at least nine different types of vehicles, reports Reuters. These vehicles will include everything from a compact crossover to a large commercial van and a seven-passenger luxury SUV.
GM plans to sell these electric vehicles in the U.S. and China. The architecture will also serve a shared autonomous vehicle destined for commercial service, according to the report.
Creating a platform that fits so many vehicles will help the automaker save money. “We are committed to a future electric vehicle portfolio that will be profitable,” GM CEO Mary Barra said at a conference in New York.
Also helping to reduce costs, GM is developing a new battery system that will be 30 percent less expensive than the one in the Chevrolet Bolt. The automaker expects to slash the cost of its lithium-ion batteries from $145 per kilowatt-hour to less than $100 by 2021. These batteries will charge more quickly and store more energy than previous units.
Five years after launching its new platform, GM hopes to reach sales of 1 million EVs per year. The company has only sold around 17,000 Bolt EVs.
GM revealed last month it would introduce at least 20 new electric vehicles by 2023. The first two will arrive within the next 18 months. In total, GM plans to make three new EVs before the new platform launches, and they will share basic components with the Bolt.
