The Infiniti Q60 Red Sport 400 is 0.6 seconds quicker to 60 than a BMW 340i, 1.5 seconds quicker than a Mercedes-Benz C300, and 5.2 seconds quicker than a Toyota Prius. We know all this thanks to a quick chat with the Infiniti Q60 SpeedBot, a new Facebook Messenger chatbot developed in conjunction with Motor Trend.
The principle is simple: Open up Facebook Messenger and search for Infiniti Q60 SpeedBot (or go directly to the Infiniti Q60 SpeedBot page), and send it a message with the name of a car. The SpeedBot will reply to you with a 0-60 comparison time between the car you selected and the 400-horsepower version of the Q60 coupe, plus some editorial commentary. (The SpeedBot’s observation of our Toyota Prius request: “A Toyota hybrid is kind of an odd car to compare to Q60, don’t you think?”)
The Q60 SpeedBot draws on seven years’ worth of Motor Trend test data. The database includes 0-60 times for over 1,500 cars tested between 2011 and 2017 using Motor Trend’s GPS-linked timing equipment.
“These 0-60 times are based on real test data and not just manufacturer claims,” said Chris Walton, Motor Trend Road Test Editor. “All of our testing is done with Racelogic VBOX data-acquisition equipment by specialized test drivers who have decades of experience in finding the best launch technique for each vehicle. We make multiple runs to find the best technique and driving mode, record the exact weather conditions using our Computech RaceAir system, and, using the SAE J1349 standard, we correct our acceleration times for temperature, humidity and barometric pressure to ensure that environmental conditions do not throw off the numbers. This ensures that we are getting optimal results and real numbers that provide an accurate basis for comparison.”
All cars are compared to the Infiniti Q60 Red Sport 400, which features a 3.0 liter twin-turbo V6 that produces 400 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque and is offered with either rear- or all-wheel-drive.
Even when the Q60 Red Sport isn’t the fastest car in the comparison, the SpeedBot remains sanguine. Message Dodge Viper to the SpeedBot, and it comes back with a 3.3 second 0-60 run for the Viper ACR, with the comment, “Dodge’s Viper needs a massive engine to make it to 60 just over 1s faster.” Type in Porsche 911 Turbo S—a car that costs nearly four times as much as the Q60—and the SpeedBot will accurately report that it beats the Q60 to 60 MPH by two seconds, noting, “It is a 911 turbo, after all.” Punch in the Nissan GT-R, and the SpeedBot will accuse you of stacking the deck.
But when the numbers are close, the SpeedBot isn’t afraid to be direct. Type in Subaru WRX STI and the SpeedBot comes back with a 0-60 time of 4.9 seconds. “Q60 drops the STI by almost half a second,” it says. The Lexus RC F edges out the Q60 with a 0-60 time of 4.3 seconds. “So close that if you blink you’d have missed it,” opines the SpeedBot.
“We know that car enthusiasts love to compare 0-60 times and claim bragging rights when they can,” says Phil O’Conner, director, Infiniti Marketing Communications and Media. “The great thing about working with Motor Trend is that we have access to solid real-world 0-60 data, giving us the chance to remind the world that the Q60 Red Sport 400 can run with their favorite performance cars, and in many cases it’s significantly faster. The SpeedBot is all in good fun, but it also shows how competitive the Q60 Red Sport 400 is.”
