On the latest Head 2 Head episode, hosts Jonny Lieberman and Jason Cammisa pit two six-cylinder, front-engine, rear-wheel-drive, six-speed manual sport coupes against one another to see which is the better all-around fun machine.
Why these two cars? As the hosts explain, there aren’t many sports cars today with the above specifications that seat four passengers. Additionally, both vehicles weigh roughly the same and have similar power outputs, making this a close comparison on paper.
The 3,440-pound BMW M2 sports a 3.0-liter turbocharged I-6 that produces 365 hp and 343 lb-ft of torque (369 lb-ft in overboost) while the 3,514-pound Camaro 1LE comes equipped with a 3.6-liter V-6 that churns out 335 hp and 284 lb-ft.
BMW was once a leader when it came to fun-to-drive cars with a back seat, making some of the most sought-after performance machines that are still celebrated today — most notably the M3. However, BMW has recently gone soft and GM picked up the slack with its new Alpha platform that underpins the Camaro and Corvette. We saw the new platform in action in a past Head 2 Head episode where the Chevrolet Camaro SS 1LE was victorious over the BMW M4.
Professional race car driver Randy Pobst laps the two cars around the Streets of Willow with the M2 coming out on top with a time of 1:24.27 versus the Camaro’s 1:25.19. If this comparison was just about track times we’d have a winner, but it’s not that easy. Once city and back road driving are factored in, does the M2 still come out as the victor?
Check out the video below to see which car Lieberman and Cammisa pick as this episode’s winner. Will the Camaro win again?
