Lower, Longer, and Wider
In comparison to the outgoing Camry, the new car is 1.2 inches lower, 0.4 inch longer, and 1.3 inches wider, thanks to the new TNGA platform. As a result, the roof and hood are 1.0 inch and 1.5 inches lower, respectively, both of which contribute to improved ride and handling.
Control-Arm Suspension Across the Lineup
Delivering a car with engaging driving dynamics was key in the development of the 2018 Camry and like every vehicle that’s moved to Toyota’s TNGA platform, it now features a control-arm rear suspension. This setup improves the Camry’s handling and steering without sacrificing ride comfort, which should help make the car even better to drive.
Yes, There’s Still a V-6
Contrary to rumors it would feature a new turbocharged four-cylinder engine, Toyota has retained the V-6 in the 2018 Camry. Featuring Toyota’s D-4S direct- and port-injection system, the new 3.5-liter unit should be more powerful than the unit replaces. This engine produces 295 hp and 263 lb-ft of torque in the refreshed Toyota Highlander, 296 hp and 263 lb-ft in the Toyota Sienna, and 295 hp and 268 lb-ft in the Lexus RX 350.
All-New Base Engine Comes with Dynamic Force
No, the base 2.5-liter I-4 isn’t a carry over. It’s the first engine in Toyota’s new Dynamic Force powertrain family that features direct and port injection, a high compression ratio, and a thermal efficiency of 40 percent (the Camry XSE V-6 is shown above). This engine also features Toyota’s VVT-iE, an electronically controlled version of the well-known VVT-i system, which is found on many engines across the Toyota and Lexus vehicle lineup.
Eight Speeds Come Standard
On gas-only variants of the 2018 Toyota Camry, the eight-speed automatic that’s now in use in the Highlander, Sienna, and Lexus RX 350 will come standard. To minimize power loss from the torque converter, this new gearbox has a direct lock-up feature from second to eighth gear, which helps the new Camry accelerate quicker and put power down to the road more efficiently than ever.
Powerful and Efficient Hybrid Variant
The Toyota Camry Hybrid returns as part of the lineup for the 2018 model year, and its powertrain now takes the new 2.5-liter I-4 and pairs it to an electric motor, an updated CVT, and either a lithium-ion or nickel-metal hydride battery. As a result, the 2018 Camry is more powerful than the car it replaces and promises to be just as efficient as the Prius.
Eco-Friendliness with a Sporting Flair
In addition to the LE and XLE trims, the 2018 Camry comes with an SE trim like its predecessor. This time, however, the CVT comes with a Sport mode that mimics six simulated gears and a paddle shifter for manual mode operation in the SE grade. Going into Sport mode also improves the car’s acceleration, thanks to the hybrid system’s electric power boost. That means this car should help dispel the stigma that hybrid vehicles are slow.
More Junk in the Trunk
Moving to the TNGA platform means the 2018 Camry Hybrid now has its lithium-ion (or nickel-hydride in the LE trim) battery packs placed right under the rear seats. This helps lower the car’s center of gravity, which in turn improves its driving dynamics and stability. Best of all, with the batteries no longer placed in the trunk, you’ve got more cargo space for all your gear.
Active Safety Comes Standard
Starting with a number of 2017 models, Toyota has added its Toyota Safety Sense suite as standard, and it’s no different with the 2018 Camry. The 2018 Camry comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense P, which includes adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beams, and lane departure warning with steering assist. It also includes the Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, which bundles together forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and pedestrian detection.
Head-Up Display Lets You Play Fighter Pilot While Driving
The 2018 Toyota Camry will be one of the first midsize sedans to offer a head-up display option, which allows you to feel like you’re in an airplane cockpit while driving. This 10.0-inch unit projects information such as speed and navigation directions right in the driver’s field of view, eliminating the need to take your eyes off the road when following your route guidance.
Entune 3.0 Puts Connectivity at Your Fingertips
Toyota’s newest Entune multimedia interface takes things up a notch with its standard app suite, which includes Remote Connect. The app bundles remote start, vehicle status notification, a vehicle finder, a guest driver monitor, and a door lock and unlock function. Navigation is standard via Scout GPS link with Moving Maps on four-cylinder and hybrid variants, and the V-6-powered Camry features a new Dynamic Navigation system that can be updated over the air.
