Toyota revealed the 2018 Camry at the 2017 Detroit auto show. Based on its looks alone, it means business. No longer content with vanilla, the new Camry jumps right into bolder flavors, promising more engaging driving dynamics, advanced safety features, and cutting-edge technology to go with the new exterior design that’ll surely turn heads once it hits public roads. Lower, Longer, and Wider

In comparison to the outgoing Camry, the new car is 1.2 inches lower, 0.4 inch longer, and 1.3 inches wider, thanks to the new TNGA platform. As a result, the roof and hood are 1.0 inch and 1.5 inches lower, respectively, both of which contribute to improved ride and handling.

Control-Arm Suspension Across the Lineup

Delivering a car with engaging driving dynamics was key in the development of the 2018 Camry and like every vehicle that’s moved to Toyota’s TNGA platform, it now features a control-arm rear suspension. This setup improves the Camry’s handling and steering without sacrificing ride comfort, which should help make the car even better to drive.

Yes, There’s Still a V-6

Contrary to rumors it would feature a new turbocharged four-cylinder engine, Toyota has retained the V-6 in the 2018 Camry. Featuring Toyota’s D-4S direct- and port-injection system, the new 3.5-liter unit should be more powerful than the unit replaces. This engine produces 295 hp and 263 lb-ft of torque in the refreshed Toyota Highlander, 296 hp and 263 lb-ft in the Toyota Sienna, and 295 hp and 268 lb-ft in the Lexus RX 350.

All-New Base Engine Comes with Dynamic Force

No, the base 2.5-liter I-4 isn’t a carry over. It’s the first engine in Toyota’s new Dynamic Force powertrain family that features direct and port injection, a high compression ratio, and a thermal efficiency of 40 percent (the Camry XSE V-6 is shown above). This engine also features Toyota’s VVT-iE, an electronically controlled version of the well-known VVT-i system, which is found on many engines across the Toyota and Lexus vehicle lineup.

Eight Speeds Come Standard

On gas-only variants of the 2018 Toyota Camry, the eight-speed automatic that’s now in use in the Highlander, Sienna, and Lexus RX 350 will come standard. To minimize power loss from the torque converter, this new gearbox has a direct lock-up feature from second to eighth gear, which helps the new Camry accelerate quicker and put power down to the road more efficiently than ever.

Powerful and Efficient Hybrid Variant

The Toyota Camry Hybrid returns as part of the lineup for the 2018 model year, and its powertrain now takes the new 2.5-liter I-4 and pairs it to an electric motor, an updated CVT, and either a lithium-ion or nickel-metal hydride battery. As a result, the 2018 Camry is more powerful than the car it replaces and promises to be just as efficient as the Prius.
