Our spy photographers caught Volkswagen’s new three-row crossover testing in Southern California recently. These are the first shots we’ve seen of the upcoming model, which will compete with the likes of the Toyota Highlander and Honda Pilot.
Don’t be fooled by the imposturous badging. The VW prototype looks quite similar to the CrossBlue concept that debuted at the 2013 Detroit auto show. Like the concept, this test mule features a flat and square-shaped front end as well as silver roof rails. Although the front grille has changed, the new VW has a rear wing and square taillights that are both similar to the concept. The prototype and concept also feature similar body lines and body cladding.
The three-row crossover will sit on VW’s new MQB platform. It will offer room for at least seven people, and should be sized similarly to the Honda Pilot. Prices for the large crossover could reach $50,000, making it one of the most expensive vehicles to wear a VW badge. For the high price, however, expect a nice interior as well as a sunroof and driver assistance technologies.
The crossover could borrow the Passat’s 3.6-liter V-6 engine and offer front- and all-wheel drive. The automaker may also offer a 2.0-liter turbo-four as well as hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions.
So far, Volkswagen hasn’t divulged a name for its large crossover, but we will likely hear more on that front soon. And yes, it will be sold here in the U.S. The model will go into production at VW’s Chattanooga plant in Tennessee.
This Volkswagen three-row crossover is just one of many crossovers coming to the automaker’s lineup. Volkswagen has also brought out the CrossBlue Coupe and Cross Coupe GTE concept vehicles to whet our appetites. A new Tiguan, which we saw last year, is also in the pipeline.
