Last year, the Kia Sportage failed to qualify for the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) Top Safety Pick+ award due to a poor rating on the small overlap crash test. This year, the 2017 Sportage has managed to earn a good rating, and has earned the coveted safety accolade.
The 2017 Kia Sportage has been redesigned, and is underpinned by the same platform as the 2016 Hyundai Tucson. During the small overlap crash test, the parking brake pedal only moved 6 inches, while last year’s Sportage moved 16 inches. In other areas, there was only a movement of 3 inches or less.
For the moderate overlap front crash, side impact, roof strength, and head restraint tests, the 2017 Sportage earned good ratings. In the front crash prevention tech category, the small SUV earned a superior rating after avoiding collisions at both 12 and 25 mph.
The 2017 Kia Sportage joins seven other small SUVs that have earned the Top Safety Pick + Award, including the 2016 Fiat 500X, 2016 Honda CR-V, 2016 Hyundai Tucson, 2016 Mazda CX-5, 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander, 2016 Subaru Forester, and 2016 Toyota Rav4. To qualify for top marks, a vehicle must achieve good ratings in all crash tests and have an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention systems.
