The 2016 Toyota Prius has been named a Top Safety Pick+ winner by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
The model earned “Good” scores in all five crash tests, including the difficult small overlap test. Last year, the Prius earned an “Acceptable” score in this category, as the agency said the car’s structure didn’t hold up well in this test. For 2016, the Prius performed much better, and the dummy showed there’s a low risk of injury in a real-life crash of the same severity.
For 2016, the Prius also earned a “Superior” rating in front crash prevention technology, up one rating notch from last year. That’s thanks to the car’s optional Advanced Technology Package, which includes a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, and other safety technologies. In IIHS tests, the 2016 Prius managed to avoid collisions at both 12 mph and 25 mph.
The 2016 Prius joins the 2016 Toyota Prius v as a Top Safety Pick+ awardee. Meanwhile, the smaller Toyota Prius c does not earn the honor this year due to its “Acceptable” small overlap rating and insufficient front crash prevention results.
