Mazda has begun production on the second-generation CX-9 crossover in Japan, and the first units are coming to the U.S. and Canada. The 2016 Mazda CX-9 goes on sale in North America later this spring.
The automaker has also started producing the crossover’s 2.5-liter Skyactiv turbocharged four-cylinder engine at its plant in Hiroshima, Japan. The new engine, which replaces the old 3.7-liter V-6, produces 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque while running on regular fuel. It comes paired with a six-speed automatic and standard front-wheel drive, although all-wheel drive is optional.
The new model represents a big move forward for the CX-9, which hasn’t been fully revamped since the 2007 model year. The crossover will offer features such as a 12-speaker Bose audio system, a touchscreen infotainment system, rosewood and aluminum interior accents, Nappa leather upholstery, and a suite of active safety features.
Mazda says the new CX-9 was specifically tailored to the North American market, which should account for 80 percent of the model’s total sales. The model will compete with the likes of the Ford Explorer, Honda Pilot, Nissan Pathfinder, and Toyota Highlander when it goes on sale in a few months.
The automaker will likely announce pricing for the 2016 CX-9 soon. We’re also awaiting an official announcement on the CX-9’s fuel economy.
