The next mid-size Subaru SUV will bow in 2018, and will be built at the company’s Lafayette, Indiana, plant, the company confirmed today.
-Subaru has hinted at a Tribeca successor since the final 2014 model year, and while it no doubt has hurt Subaru to have not fielded a competitive entry in such a hot segment—the Tribeca was the definition of milquetoast—it hasn’t stopped Subaru from moving versatile machines like the Forester and XV Crosstrek in droves. There’s no name yet for Subie’s next crossover—we previously offered up a great suggestion—but it almost assuredly will bring to mind the outdoorsy lifestyle that its customer base loves.
-The third row will be an actual third row for adults, as opposed to a punishment corner for kids, as the vehicle’s overall dimensions will grow beyond the Tribeca’s 191.5-inch length and 108.2-inch wheelbase. Beyond that, we know nothing other than to expect Subaru’s trusty 3.6-liter flat-six and its latest camera-based driver assists.

With this new SUV to build—plus an all-new Impreza sedan and hatch scheduled for late 2016—the Indiana plant, which also assembles the Outback, Legacy, Impreza, and some Toyota Camry models, will be on the hook for some 394,000 cars per year, or 73 percent more than Subaru expects it to build this year. The coasts are hungry, and they must be fed.
