Two years ago at the Frankfurt Auto Show, Mercedes-Benz unveiled the S-class Coupe Concept, a ridiculously lovely thing meant to bring back the glory days of the personal luxury coupe. We’d say it succeeded. Blessed with all the goodness of today’s excellent Sonderklasse and wrapped in the sort of skin one might find in a high-end Berlin adults-only establishment, the S-coupe was one of the most talked-about machines at the 2013 show. This year, Mercedes is hoping to repeat the magic with the S-class Cabriolet.
-Benz hasn’t offered a full-size decapotable since the last W112-platform droptop rolled off the line in 1971. But with the current generation of the S, Mercedes seems bound and determined to offer a model for every taste and thickness of exotic-leather pocketbook. From the stupidly wonderful S600 Maybach, and the extra-extra-length Pullman, to the AMG-fettled ’Bahn guzzlers, and the plug-in 550e, the S-class is getting crowded.

Information is thin on the new car, but expect it to feature Mercedes’ comfort-enhancing Airscarf neck warmers and Aircap wind baffle. No word yet on what engines will be offered, but we imagine they will be similar to the coupe’s options. Expect an S550. We wouldn’t be shocked at an S600, given Rolls-Royce’s upcoming Dawn. We’d also hazard that an S63 and S65 AMG are probably pretty likely. Rejoice, well-heeled personal-luxury aficionados, because steamrolling the unwashed is about to get a whole lot airier!
