In what is quite possibly the most one-percenter-oriented NHTSA recall announcement extant, it has come to light that Ferrari is recalling certain 2015 model-year 458 Italia, 458 Speciale, California T, FF, F12berlinetta, and LaFerrari models over improperly installed Takata-supplied driver’s-side airbags. Notably, the problem is unrelated to the exploding, shrapnel-shooting Takata airbags fitted to roughly 19.4-million recalled U.S.-market vehicles.

According to Ferrari’s filings with NHTSA, the driver’s-side airbags in the affected Ferraris were installed in a slightly “rotated orientation,” which, in combination with improperly glued airbag covers, can lead to the airbag itself deploying in a rotated manner. This can increase the risk of injury in a crash, as an airbag’s deployment orientation is critical to its proper function. The report also states that “the potential for rotated deployment is extremely limited, [but] out of an abundance of caution Ferrari is moving swiftly to issue a stop-sale order and implement a safety defect recall to remedy this potential safety defect on all potentially affected vehicles.”

In total, 814 Ferraris manufactured between December 19, 2014 and April 29, 2015 are affected. Again, the report indicated the issue is rooted in Ferrari’s assembly techniques and not Takata’s airbag design, and the flaw was discovered during testing of an updated steering column for the 458 Italia. Ferrari will contact owners of all potentially affected cars and replace the entire airbag module at no charge.
