LeMons New England Day 1: No German Cars In Top 10, Sea Sprite Leading Class C

We inspected the 132 entries at the third annual Halloween Hooptiefest 24 Hours of LeMons on Friday, and today we raced. We saw many bent fenders, many ventilated engine blocks, and more lead changes than we could follow during the course of the day. When the dust settled, though, we were able to sort out all the leaders and runners-up in the three LeMons classes. Here’s what we’ve got.

This being the Halloween race, the cars festooned with giant witches-on-brooms and wiggly spider legs seemed especially appropriate.

Leading Class A is a car we’ve seen take three overall LeMons wins in the past, the most recent being the 2013 Loudon Annoying race at this very track. Formerly the Bill Danger and the Road Hazzards ’94 Honda Accord, Team BAR(F) Honda spent the day climbing gradually up the standings. When the checkered flag flew, the BAR(F) team led the field by a single lap.

Right behind the leading Accord looms the Mr 2 Old To Care ’86 Toyota MR2, a team captained by the man who once led the Bill Danger and the Road Hazzards team. We’re not sure how much rivalry existed between the original team and the spinoff team before the race, but we’re sure it’s stronger now that the former is in P1 and the latter is in P2.

In Class B, Bazinga Racing and their ’85 Nissan 300ZX have managed to reach heights previously assumed well beyond their reach: P16 overall and a two-lead advantage in Class B.

Racing’s storied 300ZX-versus-Forester rivalry has been rekindled in Class B today, because the team chasing the Bazinga Racing Nissan is The Magic School Bus Racing Team and their ’99 Subaru Forester.

The Three Pedal Mafia 1971 Sea Sprite boat (built on a Chevrolet S-10 chassis) has pursued an elusive Class C win for several years, without success. Today, the 3PM Sea Sprite ended the first race session with a two-lap lead in the most important LeMons class.

Can the boat hold off the Dirty Penny Datsun 510 for the class win? We’ll see on Sunday.

The Mod Squad Racing MR2-based Volkswagen Vanagon isn’t contending for a class lead at the moment, but just look at it!

One of the most interesting bits of news about this race is the lack of any German cars in the top ten of the standings. We have four Volvos, an Alfa Romeo, a Datsun, a Toyota, a Pontiac, a Honda, and a Ford… but the top-ranking German car is the 11th-place Overengineer’d Racing ’91 BMW 318i. What does it mean? Be sure to check in later to see what happens on Sunday.
