New spy shots reveal economical plug-in-hybrid C-class saloon undergoing testing ahead of its expected 2015 launchSpy shots have revealed the new plug-in-hybrid variant of the recently launched Mercedes C-class being tested on public roads, ahead of its expected launch in 2015.
It's believed that the new model, which will be badged the C350, will utilise a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 engine in conjunction with a seven-speed automatic gearbox featuring an integrated electric motor. Such a powertrain has been displayed previously in the new Mercedes-Benz S-class.
No consumption figures have been announced but Mercedes has stated that it hopes to achieve a CO2 rating of 60g/km when the vehicle’s certification process is completed.
Distinguishing the car as a plug-in hybrid is a flap, mounted in the rear bumper, that allows owners access to the car's charging connector. A similar configuration is visible on the existing Mercedes-Benz S-class plug-in hybrid.
Other changes include the addition of an 'active' grille shutter, which can close to reduce drag and cut warm-up times. The Mercedes' interior remains seemingly unchanged but buyers can expect new menus and readouts in the COMAND media system for the car's drivetrain and battery.
Mercedes' most efficient C-class is currently the C220 BlueTEC, which is claimed to average 70.6mpg. It's powered by a conventional 2.1-litre turbocharged diesel engine that produces 168bhp
A hybrid version of the S-class has also recently been launched.
