Toyota is adding 1.37 million vehicles to the Takata airbag recalls after reports from the Japanese airbag supplier showed the Corolla as one of the highest at-risk vehicles for shrapnel-shooting inflators.
-Faulty passenger airbags were installed in more specific vehicles than Toyota had previously known, according to the company. The cars in this latest roundup, other examples of which were included in previous actions, include the 2003–2007 Corolla and Matrix, 2005–2006 Tundra, 2005–2007 Sequoia, and 2003–2007 Lexus SC430. Toyota now has recalled 2.9 million cars in the U.S. for the defective airbags. If you or someone you know own an example of one of these models that had previously not been among those recalled,
Driver’s-side airbags in 2003–2007 Toyota Corolla and Matrix models (plus the Pontiac Vibe, a twin to the Matrix), as well as 2004–2007 Honda Accord models, recorded the highest failure rates tested by Takata thus far, at 2.16 percent. Many of the 11 affected automakers are working together on third-party testing, in conjunction with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, as Takata continues to investigate why its inflators are failing. There is no solid answer at this point.
