Arjeplog, Sweden, lies just 35 miles south of the Arctic Circle. During the summer solstice, the citizens enjoy/are tormented by a sun that never fully sets. Six months later, on the shortest day of the year, just three hours of twilight interrupt the winter darkness. Average temperatures during the winter months hover just above 0 degrees Fahrenheit. And yet this town of about 2000 residents is home to what is known to some in the auto industry as the most famous gas station in the world. Northern Sweden’s brutal winters mean that Arjeplog is a go-to spot for cold-weather development testing, and in the wintertime the area’s population swells with some 1500 engineers from car companies around the world. There aren’t a lot of places to fuel up around Arjeplog, and so heavily camouflaged prototype vehicles and development mules tend to congregate at the local Shell, making the task of finding them easy for spy photographers.
