Infiniti has revealed its new Q60 concept car at the Detroit motor show.
The two-door model, which Infiniti says is a "precursor to a high-performance sports coupé", has styling inspired by the Q80 Inspiration concept which made its debut at the Paris motor show last October.
Understood to offer a close preview of the next-generation Q60, which was introduced to US markets last year, the company says the concept "reflects Infiniti's intention to strengthen its offerings in the mid-size segment."
Taking design cues both from the Q80 Inspiration and from the F1-inspired Q50 Eau Rouge, the Q60 offers an aggressive look and sits on 21-inch alloy wheels. Features include dual exhausts and a prominent spoiler at the rear, and large air intakes at the front, including Infiniti's large corporate grille and LED headlight design.
The Q60 concept measures 4690mm long by 1865mm wide and 1370mm high, making it shorter, narrower and taller than the Q80 Inspiration.
Power for the Q60 concept comes from the same 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engine as the Q80 Inspiration, in which it produces 444bhp. The engine is coupled to a seven-speed automatic transmission.
That engine is the first from a new generation of "powerful and efficient" Infiniti powertrains which will come to market within the next two years.
Inside, the Q60 concept features leather trim with carbonfibre accents, and individual bucket seats.
Technical highlights of the Q60 include Infiniti's new InTuition system, which allows up to four drivers to save presets for audio, navigation, heating, ventilation and telematics settings.
Also featuring is Infiniti's electrically assisted steering system, dubbed Direct Adaptive Steering, which first appeared on the Q50.
When it comes to market, the production Q60 will play an important role in securing Infiniti's expansion plans.
Though it is still unconfirmed whether the Q60 will come to Europe, Infiniti has already revealed that it plans to have a line-up comprising 10 models, bookended by the Q80 Inspiration at one end and a new Q20 entry-level model at the other. The new, British-built Q30 will also be part of that range when it goes on sale this autumn.
Infiniti executive design director Alfonso Albaisa said: "The Q60 Concept is Infiniti’s vision for a sports coupé. Design, performance and premium quality – these are what makes a sports coupé stand above the crowd. And these are what you’ll find on the definitive Q60 Concept.”
