With the best gasoline mileage of any car you could buy in the United States, this tiny rear-wheel-drive 1982 Toyota Starlet was still on the road at age 37... when a crash took it out of commission.
Although you should never judge a car solely by its styling, design is a good place to start with the new 2019 Volkswagen Arteon. The four-door hatch already looks good in photos, but seeing it in person reveals details you might not instantly notice on your phone. Don’t miss our review of the U.S.-spec 2019 Volkswagen Arteonhere, and then check out seven design details based on our time driving in and walking around Arteons of different trims and colors.
What a CHMSL!
No, CHMSL isn’t a bunch of random letters. The center high-mounted stop lamp is the third brake light all cars have somewhere on their rear glass. In the 2019 Arteon, the CHMSL stretches nearly the entire length of the top of the glass. It’s a premium detail I associate most prominently with Audi and Bentley.
Do You See It?
A subtle character line rises from the side of the trunk lid above the windows and to the end of the A-pillar. Although certainly not a make-or-break detail, it enhances the 2019 Arteon’s premium exterior design.
Line-Free
Next time you see a parked Arteon, look at the clamshell hood. Thanks to the fact that the hood extends all the way to the top of the wheel wells, the top of the hood itself lacks the conventional hood cut lines found on most other cars.
Strong Shoulders
Although certainly not unique to the Arteon, the VW has strong shoulders—there’s no slab-sided styling here.
In Case You Forget the Name of Your Car …
… the VW’s name appears in big letters on the back of the car. True, even the Toyota Camry and new Volkswagen Passat have versions of this, but it looks classy on the Arteon.
Wheel-y Nice
The U.S.-spec Arteon is offered with 18-, 19-, and 20-inch wheels. This itself isn’t exciting, but some premium cars roll on wheels that look like the base size and design they are. That’s not the case with the Arteon’s 18-inch alloys, which feature an interesting design with black accents. Even with 18s, the Arteon still has style.
So Low
The Arteon’s hood drops down low, an effect accentuated by a body-colored panel at the top of the grille. The front grille is positioned low and easily distinguishes the Arteon from other Volkswagens.
Even though the 2019 Arteon’s interior doesn’t quite reach the quality of the exterior, the car’s curb appeal makes clear this is not just another Avalon, Maxima, or even Stinger. The VW hatch has clean lines and should appeal to those who want a premium but still understated look.
