Compact SUVs are supposed to hit the sweet spot in size: Big enough to provide room for a busy family, but small enough that you need not call the harbor pilot to park in a crowded lot. But some compact SUVs are better than others in packaging space for your stuff. We’ve found the five vehicles in this segment that offer the highest cargo capacity.
Motor Trend doesn’t mind the Escape’s firm ride—it goes with the sporty handling—but we wish the 1.5 liter EcoBoost turbo engine provided better acceleration.
4th Place: Nissan Rogue
How much does it hold?
Seats folded: 70.0 cubic feet
Seats in place: 32.0 cubic feet
Base price: $23,820
The Nissan Rogue has a classy interior and an optional hybrid variant.
Space for seven
The Rogue not only has room for extra cargo, it has also room for extra people—it’s the only SUV on this list to offer a third-row seat. (That said, they’ll need to be extra-small to fit back there.)
The Rogue has lots of family-friendly features, but it’s slow and not particularly rewarding to drive.
3rd Place: Toyota RAV4
How much does it hold?
Seats folded: 73.4 cubic feet
Seats in place: 38.4 cubic feet
Base price: $24,910
Although it stands in third place for total seats-down cargo room, the Toyota RAV4 actually holds more stuff with seats in place than the second-place Subaru Forester.
A lot to like
The RAV4 brings a lot to the table besides cargo capacity: Good looks, lots of standard safety equipment (including active driver aids that are optional on other cars), and a hybrid variant.
The RAV4 is as smart as a Mensa member and as reliable as the sunrise, but must it be so completely dull to drive?
2nd Place: Subaru Forester
How much does it hold?
Seats folded: 74.7 cubic feet
Seats in place: 34.4 cubic feet
Base price: $22,595
The Forester takes second place on a technicality; seats-up cargo space is slightly less than the RAV4, and the optional moonroof shrinks max cargo space to 68.5 cubic feet.
Standard all-wheel drive makes it a bargain
Still, we don’t hold that against the Forester. Standard all-wheel drive makes it sure-footed in bad weather and a bargain compared to other compact SUVs.
It’s as pretty as an “if-it-fits-it-ships” box but just as practical. Forester’s strong engine and great handling make it an honestly fun-to-drive SUV.
1st Place: Honda CR-V
How much does it hold?
Seats folded: 75.8 cubic feet
Seats in place: 39.2 cubic feet
Base price: $24,045
It’s no surprise to see a Honda at the top of this list. With nearly 40 cubic feet of seats-up space, the CR-V out-hauls the competition by a significant margin.
More than just a roomy trunk
The CR-V is not only roomy, but it’s also good looking, reasonably economical, and built like the proverbial brick outhouse.
The Honda CR-V is quick, economical, and agile. It used to lack exciting driving feel, but its 2017 redesign adds quick acceleration and confident handling on top of its superior packaging.
