AGYA CLUB INDONESIA : Scion Announces Un-Lame FR-S Release Series 2.0, Just 1000 Will Be Built
Even as sales taper off, the Scion FR-S—and its Subaru BRZ twin—are speaking to car enthusiasts and purists around the globe. The simplicity of design, the straightforward front-engine, rear-drive layout, and the choice of a rev-happy, naturally aspirated engine have turned it into something like the fixed-roof equivalent of a Mazda Miata.
-But alas, Subaru and Toyota (the FR-S is marketed as the Toyota GT86) elsewhere may have taken the purist approach a bit too far. The interior is clad with hard plastic parts; the noise, vibration, and harshness characteristics leave much to be desired. As a result, all but the hard-core enthusiasts have stayed away from the sporty twins.
-With the FR-S Release Series 2.0, a special edition of which 1000 units will be built, Scion is addressing that issue. The Release Series 2.0 is fitted with “luxurious appointments and premium features” such as black microsuede-upholstered seats and uplevel camel-colored trim on the armrests and door panels. It also packs additional equipment such as dual-zone air conditioning, HID xenon headlights, and a keyless ignition with pushbutton start. Outside, the Release Series 2.0 is denoted by its Lunar Storm paint, special 17-inch wheels, and front and rear spoilers.
- -Those refinements don’t come cheap; the price jumps from $26,895 for a base FR-S to $30,305 for the Release Series 2.0 (add $1100 for the automatic). And while the features are otherwise not available at Scion, most of them are included in the Subaru BRZ Limited.

Although it may seem somewhat disingenuous to make a sports car noted for its purism slightly less purist, we do applaud Scion for fixing some of its glaring issues—in a way that doesn’t detract from the vehicle’s performance. Despite Scion’s claims, the modifications don’t turn the FR-S into a “lap of luxury.” But the treatment may prompt a few more drivers to take a well-deserved closer look at this fun and cheerful sports car. And that’s not lame at all.

Permalink | Email this | CommentsAGYA CLUB INDONESIA : iM’s the Illest ’Yota Auris from Here to Gardena: Two Scion iMs for SEMA
Scion’s two latest little things, the Mazda 2–derived iA and the iM—a rebadged Toyota Auris—are solid machines. Useful, well-priced, and, in the case of the iA, decent to drive. They do, however, suffer a bit in the aesthetic department. But hey, the iM’s a single-trim-level C-segment hatch for well-equipped B-segment money. It’s nothing the aftermarket, with its cornucopia of solutions important and trivial, can’t solve. These two iMs, from Illest and Crooks and Castles, suggest see/be seen street-scene intent. Naturally, they’re SEMA specials, built as part of the Scion Tuner Challenge.
-Illest’s iM forgoes custom paint in favor of a dark gray wrap, then sets itself on the floor with an Air Lift suspension kit. Rotiform 19-inchers wear Toyo 225/35 tires. MB Quart speakers and amps make the music go bang, while occupants enjoy an upgraded suede/leather interior by DJ Designs. A Momo shift knob adds some Italian flair to the console area. Illest would also like to inform you that the lower front and rear fascias have been VIP’d out. iM VIP OMG LOLZ.
- -We’d like to say that Crooks and Castles took a different approach, but the fundamental aesthetic is pretty much the same. C and C’s car is covered in gloss paint rather than a matte wrap, its air suspension comes from AccuAir rather than Air Lift, and its Toyos are wrapped around 18” Rotiforms, rather than the 19-inchers on Illest’s car. It’s even got an Italianate shift knob, only this one’s from Nardi. But there are three very import differences here: C and C’s car is on the bottle, courtesy of NOS, and it has a roll cage and Recaro R100 race seats. Additional bulgey-muscle-packageness comes from the Vollkommen Design overfender kit.

If the Illest and Crooks and Castles mods don’t make the iM look exceedingly boss, they at least fit with Scion’s vision of young people making the machines their own. It’s just that, well, we bet plenty of middle-aged folks would enjoy the iM’s blend of practicality, frugality, and quality. And they probably won’t be dropping 100 shots of nitrous into the 1.8-liter engine any time soon. But hey, if you wanna sing out, sing out! If you wanna bro down, bro down!
- - -AGYA CLUB INDONESIA : Hecho en Mexico: The State of Auto Manufacturing South of the Border
When the last original Beetle rolled down the assembly line in 2003 and they cued the band in celebration, it was a mariachi band. Volkswagen was still building its Bug in Mexico decades after emissions and safety regulations had rendered the car obsolete elsewhere, saying a lot about the Type 1’s enduring charm. But it also made a less flattering statement, one that cast the Mexican auto industry as a dumping ground for antiquated car designs.
-The situation today couldn’t be more different. Automakers have announced $24.2 billion worth of investment in Mexico since 2010, nearly a third of all new spending on North American factories according to the nonprofit Center for Automotive Research (CAR) in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Five new Mexican assembly plants have opened in that time, producing Ford Fiestas, Honda Fits, Mazda 2s and 3s, Nissan Sentras, and Ram ProMaster vans.
-Another five plants are slated for Job One in the next five years, some of them producing—gasp!—German luxury vehicles. Volkswagen Group, for example, will spend $1.3 billion on an Audi plant, for which it is sending some Mexican employees to Ingolstadt for apprenticeships of up to two years. BMW has announced its own billion-dollar assembly plant that will go online in 2019. The Daimler and Renault-Nissan joint venture is constructing a plant with a similar price tag, where it will start building Infinitis in 2017 and Mercedes models in 2018.
-Predictably, manufacturers have been drawn to Mexico for its low wages. Mexican autoworkers’ compensation is only about 20 percent that of their U.S. counterparts. This means a Chevrolet Sonic manufactured at GM’s Ramos Arizpe plant costs the corporation $674 less than it does to build the same car in Michigan, according to CAR. That advantage is greater than the typical profit margin on a subcompact.
-But Mexico’s appeal goes beyond cheap labor. Carmakers say that Mexican workers are capable of building vehicles to a standard that meets or exceeds that of their best plants elsewhere. No less than Toyota, the world’s most manufacturing-obsessed car company, chose Mexico for its first new factory in North America since 2011. It will start building Corollas in 2019 at a site northwest of Mexico City in Celaya, Guanajuato, that is being described as a new model for the company.
-“Mexican plants have been some of the best in North America,” says Ron Harbour, a manufacturing expert and partner at the consulting group Oliver Wyman. Harbour says the German carmakers will undoubtedly build their luxury vehicles in Mexico “to the same standards as they do in their own country.”
-But competitive build quality and a few hundred dollars of labor savings are not primarily what makes our southern neighbor so attractive to the luxury brands. Mexico has free-trade agreements with more than 40 countries, including both the United States and European Union members, making it a favorable production site for so-called “global models” sold in multiple markets, such as Audi’s Q5. When the Volkswagen Group begins production of the popular crossover in San José Chiapa next year, not only will it be possible to supply the United States with its bestseller tariff-free, but it can also ship Mexican Q5s to Germany (where they are built today) without paying the EU import tax. The math is compelling: On a $45,000 vehicle, Volkswagen could pocket an additional $1125 on U.S.-bound vehicles that would otherwise be subject to a 2.5-percent duty, and it might save $4500 on those models that go to Europe, which has a 10-percent levy.

Whether Mexico continues to attract more German investment will depend on how these initial efforts fare. Potential hurdles lie in developing a deeper supplier infrastructure in Mexico, as well as combating public perception of German cars not built in Germany. And with the United States currently negotiating two separate trade agreements that could eliminate or reduce motor-vehicle tariffs with countries in Europe and 11 other nations, Mexico might lose its trump card. The Trans-Pacific Partnership could be headed to Congress soon, according to reports, with the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership to follow next year.
-“Every trade agreement we sign lessens Mexico’s advantage,” says Sean McAlinden, executive vice president of research and chief economist at CAR. “But the window is closing. You don’t build these plants twice.”
-Wall Busters
- -Carmakers have been building assembly plants in Mexico for decades. But from 2008 to 2019, they’ll have built more than they did in the previous 40 years.
- -Paying in Pesos
- -Autoworkers in Mexico earn far less per hour than those in Europe or the rest of North America but are still well ahead of workers in China and India.
